Getting Exercise In When It's Cold Outside

I am three weeks into my weight loss journey. I have eaten well, limited sugar and stayed clear from any artificial sweeteners.

I have been wanting to incorporate exercise into my regimen. Since I haven't done any form of exercise in many months I wanted to start slow by just walking. Walking in the city is a no go right now. We have been getting snow and freezing rain for weeks now. Every time the sidewalks clear just a little we get a new batch of snow. I know it's not that difficult to walk on snow but what makes it really difficult is having a toddler in a stroller in tow.

I used to love doing Cardio DVD's but can't now because I don't want to bother my neighbors downstairs. We have hardwood floors that can be kind of creaky at times.

Enough of the excuses. This is how I am going to get my exercise on:

Everyday: Set my timer to go off for every hour that I am inactive. When that hour is up I will get up for 30 minutes and clean or organize.

Saturday: Body Weight Workout

Sunday: Chair Workout, Mat Workout

Monday: Yogilates Workout

Tuesday: Body Weight Workout

Wednesday: Chair Workout, Mat Workout

Thursday: Yogilates Workout

Friday: Rest or casual walk (weather permitting)

  2. You seem to be doing really well with this. I'm proud of you and you should be too!

  3. I like how you switch it up--I find doing the same thing daily make we want to work out even less

  4. It's good that you're keeping it up in the winter. I exercise year round in the house so it's not a challenge for me, but if I did go out to do it, the winter would drive me bonkers. ;)

  5. I'm glad you are eating healthy, that is often an overlooked part of day to day life, what to speak of a weight loss diet! Here in Alberta there are some people who are very adamant about getting exercise no matter how cold, but when it's -30 C here and the sidewalks and streets alike are slick with ice... I just can't find it in me to get out and do it!

  7. Love this! I tend to slack off working out in the winter period, but especially cuz i'm not motivated to get out in the cold. These are some great idea for exercising outside! thanks for sharing!

  8. Now that sounds like a plan that you can probably stick to! It really is not too healthy to walk in the extreme cold we have been having so anything you can do indoors is much safer!

  9. I tend to slack off on either extremes. Thank goodness cold doesn't last long here. Thanks for sharing.

  10. I like to switch things up to. I get bored with exercises if I do the same things everyday. Good luck on your continued journey!

  11. Great job! It is miserable here and we've had so many snow storms and I'm itching to get outside to do some walking. I definitely find it helpful to do different activities to keep working out exciting.

  12. Good job, :) It is so cold here been in the teens for weeks. It is so hard to get motivated to work out even in doors with it so cold since the house never really is warm. I know logically working out will make me warm up but getting moving is so hard. I can't wait for spring.

Love the idea to get up and moving every hour. I will have to use that thank you. with your work out video maybe find a time when they aren't there like if they work. Or maybe talk to them and tell them what you plan on doing that way they know about 10 am this is going to happen for about 30 minutes. who knows they may want to join ;)

  13. I always admire people who get out and exercise despite the weather.

  15. You have perfect timing here! It's been absolutely freezing where we live for the past two weeks, and I have to admit there's been way too much couch surfing. Time to use some of these tips to get moving :)

  18. I do all my fitness exercise inside my room - windows open and carpet is on the floor, though it is good to run or jog outside I am shy on showing myself on public doing it. So I hope you also like doing indoor exercise especially it is cold there outside. We never have snow here but I do not run outside.

  19. I'm trying to eat healthier and lose some weight too.
I've started with the food, and watch what I drink. Think my surprise when I found out that orangejuice have more sugar than a glas of soda!

  20. Congrats on your journey! I restarted my journey on 12/29 and have lost some weight already. I just started adding activity to my regime and have gotten an online trainer as well. I like the timer idea. I kind of do that but without the timer. I have about a 30-60 minute attention span for the computer then I switch from housework to blogging to housework, etc.

  21. I always do my fitness at the gym. If I have to be inside I use Just Dance. Congrats on your journey so far.

  22. I traveled last week and spent my flight time "finding" room in the schedule to exercise. It's now incorporated into my workweek calendar. Even running a few flights of stairs a couple times a day would be an improvement over how I've been doing!

I honestly think I'm the only person on the planet who finds it easier to exercise during travel than at home.

Good luck to you!!! Keep it up.

  23. Perfectly timed post! It has been so cold outside that I can't even think about venturing out there to do things I need to get done, never mind for getting in a good run. Love your ideas for workouts and exercise that can be done indoors with minimal chaos.

  24. A very interesting post. And the links are great! Thank you for sharing.

  25. All of these are great ideas! I love the idea of setting an alarm of some sort every hour you are inactive. I think that would help me a lot. I loose track of time while on the computer and I don't think I realize how long I have been sitting. Thanks for sharing

  26. I must say I love reading about your journey as you go. I always try to get on the journey myself but often fall off. So this is great encouragement for me. Keeping rocking it you will have nothing but success for sure:) Thanks for sharing!

  27. Although its a poor excuse, I feel funny when I exercise.in the wintertime..I swear my neighbor below can hear everything and it makes me paranoid. I know its a poor excuse because when I see her leave, I still don't take advantage of it and exercise. It's so hard to exercise in the wintertime...I am so not motivated. i wish you luck in your weight loss journey. I have cut wheat and sugar from my diet, and it is going well.

  29. I've been stuck to just my indoor workout dvds. I am MISSING being able to go walk and ride bikes, but it's just too darn cold to get my little girl out. Soon though, hopefully lol.

  30. I definitely need to work on working out more whether its cold or not. I've been lazy lately and need to get my butt in gear!

  31. This is really good especially when your age is getting higher. We need to exercise more. I also planned to do this because of my bad lifestyle and need to change it also. Good luck and stay on track!

  32. It's so hard to stay motivated in the winter. I love your idea of setting a timer. I spend a lot of time at the computer, so it's also a great way to give my eyes a break. :)

  33. Great choices! I miss going for my walks, but with all this snow we've had.. I need to find a good indoor activity!

  38. I need to start exercising. But when it is cold it is hard for me to motivate. I just want to stay curled up in a blanket. I need to suck it up and just do it though
